History

St. Brendan’s Boys National School was opened in 1959 on McAuley Road, with Myles Byrne as Principal. By the end of the 1960’s some 800 boys attended the school with extra prefabs being added and with a staff of 22 teachers. With the opening of other primary schools in the area, enrolment in St. Brendan’s came back to its intended size and now functions comfortably with a staff of 13 teachers. St. Brendan’s is a spacious building with 12 classrooms.

Over the years some cloakrooms have been converted to offices and resource rooms. There are 7 mainstream classrooms, 3.5 resource/learning support rooms, 1 library, a staff room, visiting teachers room, breakfast room, hall and meditation room. There are 3 toilet areas, principals’ office, secretary’s office and H.S.C.L. office.

The school is situated in the heart of Artane on 7 Acres approx. which allows plenty of hard and grass play areas for children. The school has lawned/flowered gardens to the front, which are maintained by caretaker – part-time, children and through the School Completion Programme gardening club.

The school garden won the “European Conservation Award” garden competition in 1989, the “Environmental Awareness Award” in 1995 and 1998 and the first green flag from An Taisce for recycling in 2009. Since then we have been awarded a further two green flags for energy in 2011 and water conservation in 2013 and are working on our fourth flag for travel. We are very lucky to have a very active gardening group who have been responsible for creating a beautiful ‘Rainbow’ garden and mural in conjunction with the boys and staff of the school. This garden has been created in advance of our work on the fifth flag for bio diversity.The school has also a fine assembly hall, playground and large playing field to the rear of the building.

The school hall plays an important part in the area, being used by various groups such as Girl Guides, FACT dance classes, Ladies Club, Senior Citizens & Sports Clubs.

In 2009 we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the school.

In September 2009 Ms. Siobhan Flynn became Principal.
