Active Schools

Active School Flag (ASF)

The Active School Flag (ASF) is a national initiative that celebrates and supports schools in becoming more physically active and promoting wellbeing across the whole school community. The programme encourages schools to adopt a whole-school approach towards physical activity — making movement, fun and participation part of everyday school life.

What the Active School Flag Means

An Active School is one where:

  • Physical activity is valued, promoted and enjoyed by students, staff and the wider school community.

  • Students are supported to move more often, both in and out of structured PE.

Schools that can demonstrate meaningful improvements in areas such as Physical Education, daily physical activity, partnerships and delivery of an Active Schools Week can be awarded the Active School Flag — a mark of the school’s commitment to health and wellbeing.

The Goals of the Active School Flag

The ASF programme aims to:

  • Promote physical activity in a fun, inclusive and positive way.

  • Support schools in finding ways to energise the school day and reduce sedentary behaviour.

  • Encourage strong Physical Education provision and enhance physical literacy.

  • Empower students with a voice in how physical activity happens at school.

  • Build partnerships with families and local organisations.

  • Generate a community where good practices are shared and celebrated.

How It Works

To work towards the Active School Flag, schools:

  • Self-evaluate their current physical activity provision.

  • Plan and implement improvements in PE, physical activity opportunities and school culture.

  • Engage students, teachers, parents and partners in regular activities and events.

  • Organise an Active Schools Week — a designated week of active events and challenges for everyone in the school.

Once a school achieves the ASF, the flag remains valid for a period of time (usually three years), after which the school can renew their award.

Examples of Activities

Schools involved in the Active School Flag initiative often take part in:

  • Whole-school challenges (like “Skip Around Europe” or “Skip Around the World”) that prioritise inclusion and fun.

  • Movement breaks and active lessons throughout the school day.

  • Student-led committees that organise games, events and fun activities to keep everyone engaged.

  • Active Schools Week, with events and ideas to get everyone moving.

Why It Matters

Research shows that physical activity during the school day supports:

  • Improved focus and classroom behaviour

  • Better learning and academic outcomes

  • Enhanced wellbeing, confidence and teamwork

  • Stronger relationships across the school community

By working towards the Active School Flag, schools help students build healthy lifelong habits — making active living part of everyday school life.
